Cooking Appliances Finish Year Up 3.2%
All Major Appliance numbers flat for 2018.
The Association of Home Appliances Manufacturers’ (AHAM) December shipment numbers showed an increase in overall Major Appliances, jumping to 7,285.9, a 4.7% increase from December 2017. The year-to-date number was flat at 79,225.8, an increase of 0.1% over last year.
The overall cooking category saw one of the strongest end-of-year performances in both monthly and year-to-date activity, rising to 2,368.8 for December, a 3.8% increase, as well as improving to 22,763.4 year to date, a 3.2% increase.
However, continuing its streak of surging activity, the home comfort category increased to 43.6% over this time last year, increasing from 360.9 to 518.2. The year-to-date numbers were flat, remaining at 10,399.9. A further breakdown of the numbers showed a 72% increase in room air conditioners to 415.9 over December of last year.
Other categories mirrored the flat growth indicated in the overall major appliance numbers.
The home laundry monthly shipments saw a modest bump, rising to 1,629.1, or 2.5%, and decreased to 17,231.9 year to date, a 3% decline.
Kitchen cleanup numbers decreased to 1,506.4 monthly, or 0.4%, and declined to 15,584.1 year to date, falling 0.6%. December’s food preservation shipments stand at 1,263.4, a 4.2% increase, while year to date numbers fell to 13,246.5, a 0.1% decrease.
The AHAM 6* index showed a 3.6% increase to 4,669.3 for the month, and a decline of 0.5% to 47,436.6 year to date.
