Major Appliances Hold Steady Again
October overall numbers decline slightly..
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers’ (AHAM) October shipment numbers showed a decrease in overall Major Appliances, falling to 5,696.6, a 0.1% decrease from October 2017. The year-to-date number fell to 65,968.2, a decrease of 0.6% over last year.
The strongest surge came from home comfort, which gained almost 249.2% over this time last year, increasing from 77.5 to 270.7. The year-to-date numbers saw a more modest fluctuation, decreasing from 9,915.1 to 9,508.7, or a 4.1% decrease. A further breakdown of the numbers showed a 668.1% increase in room air conditioners to 98.8 and 165.8% increase in dehumidifiers to 171.9 over October of last year.
The overall cooking category saw another slight decline in the monthly numbers but an increase in year-to-date activity, dropping to 1,778.5 for October, a .2% decrease, but improving to 18,537 year to date, a 3.6% increase.
The remaining categories of home laundry, kitchen cleanup, and food preservation all saw modest decreases across the board.
Home laundry monthly shipments declined to 1,296.1, or 7.8%, and decreased to 14,209.6 year to date, a 3% decline. Kitchen cleanup numbers decreased to 1,231.4 monthly, or 2.8%, and declined to 12,855.7 year to date, falling 1%. October’s food preservation shipments stand at 1,119.9, a 4.3% decrease, while year to date numbers fell to 10,857.2, a 0.8% decrease.
In similar fashion, the AHAM 6* index showed a 3.8% decrease to 3,757 for the month, and a decline of 0.8% to 38,806.9 year to date.
