Major Appliances Holding Steady
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers’ (AHAM) September shipment numbers showed a decrease in overall Major Appliances, falling to 7,510.6, a 0.4% decrease from September 2017. The year-to-date number fell to 60,271.5, a decrease of 0.7% over last year.
The strongest surge came from gas surface cooking units, which gained almost 10% over this time last year, increasing from 33.3 to 36.6%. Year-to-date numbers saw an increase from 267.1 to 275.9, or a 3.3% increase.
The overall cooking category saw a decline in the monthly numbers but an increase in year-to-date activity, dropping to 2,157.4 for September, a 6% decrease, but improving to 16,758.5 year to date, a 4% increase.
Conversely, a number of categories experienced increases in their monthly numbers and decreases in year-to-date performance, including home laundry, kitchen cleanup, food preservation, and home comfort.
Home laundry monthly shipments rose to 1,911.3, or 1.9%, but decreased to 12,913.4 year to date, a 2.5% decline. Kitchen cleanup numbers rose to 1,563.6 monthly, or 2.6%, but declined to 11,624.2 year to date, falling 0.8%. September’s food preservation shipments stand at 1,475.5, a 2% increase, while year to date numbers fell to 9,737.4, a 0.3% decrease. Home comfort totals increased to 402.7 monthly, a 0.7% increase, but fell 6.1% to 9,237.9 year to date.
In similar fashion, the AHAM 6* index showed a 1.1% increase to 5,078.6 for the month, but a decline of 0.4% to 35,049.9 year to date.
