Refrigerant Research Conference Reveals Detailed Look at Low-GWP Options
More than 160 leading refrigerant researchers and manufacturers came together on January 21, 2016, to review the results of the second phase of the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute’s (AHRI) Low-GWP Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program. This phase of the program focused on alternative refrigerants that were not initially evaluated when the program began in 2011. It included applications at high ambient conditions and testing on 17 new low-GWP refrigerants candidates.
The program was first established to evaluate promising alternative refrigerants for major product categories, including air conditioners, heat pumps, chillers, ice makers, and refrigeration equipment. All research reports, from both phases, are available at www.ahrinet.org/AREP.
The conference was held before the start of the ASHRAE winter conference and AHR Expo in Orlando, FL, to allow interested parties to participate in all three events. The event sold out at the end of last year, and a packed conference hall heard the results from 20 presenters. Attendees traveled from all over the world, including Europe, China, Japan, and the Middle East.
AHRI will continue to evaluate and meet the research needs of the industry as necessary. Currently AHRI is conducting research on flammable refrigerants, as many alternatives to high-GWP refrigerants are considered mildly flammable. To that end, AHRI announced last year that it will commit up to $1 million for a collaborative, tightly focused research effort into how to safely use these refrigerants. AHRI also is seeking additional sponsors to help fund the research.
The research program is overseen by a technical committee comprised of experts from AHRI member companies.
