Historically, axial flow fans have been balanced in only a single plane (static unbalance.) Controlling static unbalance helps to control radial vibration in a system, but does not address axial vibration. Axial vibration can be caused by two-plane unbalance of the motor and fan assembly and can be accentuated by the axial end play (“end bump”) of the motor bearings. In many systems, axial vibration creates more noise problems than does radial vibration. TEC AIR has applied its balancing expertise to axial flow fans producing fans that are two-pIane balanced to extremely low levels.

TEC AIR’s balancing expertise provides for in-mold correction of two-plane unbalance conditions. This technology has been applied to blower wheels in automotive applications for sometime but is now being applied to axial flow fans. Application of this technology in refrigerators has contributed to the industry’s lowest noise claim by some of TEC AIR’s customers.

The KBVF Adjustable Fre-quency Drive is designed to provide variable speed control of standard three-phase AC induction motors. Adjustable linear acceleration and deceleration are provided, making the drive suitable for soft start applications.

The output voltage is sinewave coded PWM operating at 16 kHz, which provides high motor torque, high efficiency and low noise. The KBVF is a full-featured drive, and due to its user-friendly design, it is easy to install and operate. Simple trimpot adjustments eliminate the computer-like programming required on other drives. However, for most applications, no adjustments are necessary.

The KBVF main features include Adjustable RMS Current Limit and I2t Motor Overload Protection. Adjustable Slip Compensation provides excellent load regulation over a wide speed range. Power Start™ delivers over 200 percent motor torque to insure startup of high frictional loads. Several models, through 1 HP, are available to control standard 208-230 VAC-50, 60 and 50/60Hz motors from either a 115 or 230VAC-50/60Hz—1f AC line. The KBVF is easily tailored to specific requirements via selectable jumpers, such as Frequency Range (0-60, 0-120, 0-50Hz), Auto/Manual Restart, and Forward-Stop-Reverse/Enable operation. Other standard features include Electronic Inrush Current Limit (EICL™), which eliminates harmful AC line inrush current, and a built-in dV/dT filter, which reduces harmful voltage spikes to the motor. Also, two LED indicator lamps provide the user with diagnostic information. The drive is housed in a versatile U-frame chassis, with a mounting footprint consistent with industry standards. A 5K potentiometer is included along with a complete instruction manual. The controls are UL recognized for the U.S.A. and Canada and CE approved.

As such, PEI’s web site serves as an electronic clearinghouse for PEI members looking to augment their consumer reach via the Internet.

Consumers are directed to the site by the Porcelain Enamel Institute’s national cable television advertising campaign on Home and Garden Television (HGTV) and print advertising. Edge Trim Scrap Choppers

As designers and builders of metal coil processing machines, Iowa Precision Industries in Cedar Rapids, Iowa offers the SC4810 Scrap Chopping System. This equipment is offered as a replacement for scrap balling or winding and was designed to simplify the handling of edge trim. It eliminates the down time required to remove and band the normally balled edge trim and provides a much safer means of handling this scrap. The long strips of edge trim are converted into easily handled short pieces.

The choppers operate only when material is moving through the line. Drive is to a dual set of stub arbors containing helical knives, which use rotary motion to shear the material. This results in long life and extremely quiet operation of the knives.

The trim chopping system is constructed within the frame of Iowa Precision blanking lines and the trim is automatically fed into the chopping knives after slitting. Simple positioning of each chopper head is by way of a handwheel and position indicator.

A motorized conveyor moves the chopped edge trim to the backside of the machine for disposal, to a scrap bin or additional conveyor. The discharge point is 45-in. over the floor and several feet from the side of the machine frame to provide fork truck access.
