(VCMA) announced that industry sales of full-size household vacuum cleaners set a new record in 2000. Industry sales in 2000 amounted to 18,550,381 units, an 8 percent increase over 1999, which was the previous best selling year.

Over the past 15 years sales have increased substantially, from 9.3 million units in 1985 to nearly 20 million this past year. Records have been set in 12 of those 15 years.

Sales in the fourth quarter amounted to 5,089,811 units. Although down slightly, by 0.1 percent, from 5,139,493 units in the same period of 1999, it is the third time in history that quarterly sales have passed the 5 million unit mark, indicating the continued sales strength of the vacuum cleaner business.

Sales of central vacuum cleaners, not included in the above figures, increased 2.6 percent in 2000 to a record high level. Central vacuum cleaner sales have steadily risen in recent years.
