Pepsi Brings 'Green' Vending Machines to U.S.

A pilot program to test an all-natural refrigeration system in Pepsi-Cola vending machines begins this month in the Washington, D.C., area. The company says that the pilot project introduces the most climate-friendly vending machines ever placed in the United States.

The machines use less energy and generate 12% less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than current vending machines. In addition to their energy efficiency improvements, the new machines use carbon dioxide (CO2), a natural refrigerant, instead of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

COVER STORY

Decoration: Translating Texture

Imagine being able to recreate the texture of fine silk on a metal surface. It sounds impossible, but the capability exists now. Silk, or virtually any other texture, can be recreated on metal foil with such accuracy and fineness of detail that it looks and feels like the real thing. The process for accomplishing this feat was developed by a small South Korean firm that combined nano-imprinting and nano-electroforming techniques.

Cooling Technologies: Alternative Refrigerants Attract Attention

The vast majority of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, both residential and commercial, rely on vapor compression systems to remove heat. For decades, ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) were the refrigerant of choice for such systems. Further research and development has led to increased use of these natural refrigerants, which had once been popular, were displaced, and are now back. These include carbon dioxide (R-744) and hydrocarbons such as isobutane (R-600a) and propane (R-290a). Read more...

Cooling Technologies: Compact Compressor

Refrigeration compressors powered by direct current (DC) electrical energy have traditionally been relegated to mobile refrigeration systems, where batteries or vehicle alternators are the source of power. But a recent development, the emergence of solar power, and, to a lesser extent, fuel cells, has provided added lift to the entire field of portable power. The result is that mobile refrigeration and portable cooling have been re-energized, creating new opportunities for innovative appliances that do not rely on grid power. Read more...

Motors: Cutting Cooling Costs

Increasing energy prices, tighter energy efficiency legislation, and interest in energy conservation have created a strong demand for efficient refrigerated appliances. Possibly the easiest and most widely adopted energy-efficiency improvement is the substitution of electronically commutated (ECM) evaporator and condenser fan motors for their wasteful traditional motor counterparts.
