GE Eyes Spin-Off of Entire Unit

GE announced July 10 that it is continuing to explore all options for its Consumer & Industrial businesses with a primary focus on spinning-off the entire unit -- Appliances, Lighting and Industrial -- to existing GE shareholders.

The Fairfield, Conn., company announced on May 16 that a spin-off was one possible outcome of the strategic review of its Appliances division. "As we explored our optionsfor Appliances, it became clear that the fastest, most efficient step we could take incompleting the transformation of our Industrial portfolio would be to focus on apossible spin-off of the entire unit," GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt said. "This isconsistent with the strategy we have been executing to transform the GE portfoliofor long-term growth and makes sense for GE shareholders." Read more...

Manitowoc Wins Auction for Enodis

The Manitowoc Co. announced that it has been notified by the UK Takeover Panel that Enodis plc intends to recommend Manitowoc's offer following completion of an auction process with Illinois Tool Works. Manitowoc's successful bid was 328 pence per Enodis share, resulting in a transaction valued at approximately $2.7 billion, including the assumption of Enodis' net debt (approximately $249 million / 125 million pounds Sterling as of March 29, 2008).  Read more...

BETCO Incorporated has developed a new male tab connector option for its patented Flat-Snap product that won the 2007 Electronic Products Product of the Year Award.

Now Flat-Snap can also mate with a new U
L approved male combo tab that may be preferable in some applications. The new male tab provides a greater surface contact area than conventional UL male tabs and exhibits significant performance advantages. It also has a locking clip to prevent bendback. Its flexible design can also be customized and insulated.

Like the original unisex Flat-Snap electronic connection, this new product makes it possible to connect wires with one quick snap. In addition, either Flat-Snap product will stay connected in high vibration environments better than standard connections. Call Sean Dunn at 401-467-2400 for more information or visit

U.S. and Indian HVACR Industry Harmonize Equipment Performance Standards

General Electric Co.'s CEO Jeff Immelt has named five non-U.S. appliance manufacturers as potential bidders for the company's appliance businesses, according to a Reuters report. The companies are China's Haier, South Korea's LG Electronics, Sweden's Electrolux, Mexico's Controladora Mabe and Turkey's Arcelik. According to the report, Immelt says that it was "obvious" who would be interested in the unit, which last year sold $7.2 billion worth of refrigerators, washing machines and other household appliances. AHRI Seeks Improved Rulemaking

Citing poor cost predictions made during past rulemakings for central air conditioners and heat pumps, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) called on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to be more "thorough and vigorous" during its next rulemaking process that began earlier this month. DOE will use the rulemaking process to determine whether the minimum efficiency standards, which were increased in 2006, should be revised again by 2016.

AHRI's Vice President for Regulatory Policy and Research Karim Amrane testified June 12, during a public meeting in Washington, D.C., that DOE severely underestimated the cost increase from a 10 SEER to a 13 SEER system. Read more...

APEC Issues Call for Participation for Feb. 2009 Conference

Gas Technology: Fire It Up Fast

Reliable ignition is the top priority for design engineers developing gas appliances, and is of utmost concern for other functions such as marketing, sales, quality assurance, and field service. Until recently, the designers of gas appliances had to choose between two on-demand ignition technologies: spark and hot surface. Now there is a third choice, a system that utilizes a low-voltage, resistive-wire coil that can be adapted to different burner systems. This adaptable technology has emerged as a strong alternative for designers seeking a higher level of ignition reliability. Read more ...

Motors & Pumps: Airing the Options

ad0708_motors_lead

For engineers designing pressurized air or vacuum systems, it's important to understand that no single air-pressure or vacuum technology is optimal for all applications, as illustrated by the comparisons shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. To help narrow down the choices, engineers can peruse charts for flow, pressure, and vacuum that are widely available from pump manufacturers. Before starting the process, however, it is helpful to be acquainted with the chief characteristics of the most common pump technologies used by equipment designers. Learn more...

Heating Elements: Conductive Clarity

ad0708_heating_lead

Glass is a challenging material for designers to work with, but for applications with see-through requirements, glass is typically the material of choice. The challenge of designing with glass can become more pronounced in situations where the glass must be electrically heated - resistive heating elements must be applied to, or within, the glass without significantly interfering with its transparency. Fortunately, a number of suppliers offer solutions for such cases. Find out more.

Controls & Sensors: Responsive Refrigeration

ad0708_controls_lead

With global energy prices soaring to record high levels and no end in sight, appliance manufacturers struggle to find innovative and effective ways to improve energy efficiency. Among the most energy-consuming and expensive of all appliances are compressor-based heating and cooling systems. These include living space heating, cooling and comfort control equipment, as well as refrigerators and freezers that are present in millions of households and businesses throughout the world. And that is why any efficiency improvements to compressor-based equipment can have a significant impact on both the end-users and society as a whole. Want to learn more?
