Residential Cooling, Heating Equipment
Shipments Down in February

U.S. factory shipments of residential cooling and heating equipment declined in February, compared with the same month a year ago, while the commercial market for these products maintained steady growth, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Read more...

UL Issues Mexico's First
Third Party Product Certification

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), of Northbrook, Ill., a world leader of product safety testing services, recently issued the first Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOM) Mark to a global electronics manufacturing customer entering the Mexican market. In a global marketplace with multiple standard certifications, companies need to be able to go through a single third party testing organization such as UL for all their product certification needs in order to move products into the market more quickly. UL worked closely with the government of Mexico to obtain accreditation as a third-party product certification organization to help speed entry into the market. Read more...

Henkel Acquires Adhesive
and Electronic Materials Businesses

Henkel has taken over from Akzo Nobel the Adhesives and Electronic Materials businesses previously owned by National Starch.

"This acquisition represents a milestone in our 130-plus-year corporate history and points Henkel clearly in the direction of further profitable growth," said Ulrich Lehner, Chairman of the Management Board of Henkel KGaA. The acquisition was preceded by the carve-out of the businesses to be acquired by Henkel and the requisite antitrust and anticompetitive investigations by the relevant authorities.

COVER STORY
Cooling: Rethinking Refrigerants

The first major phase change for refrigerants has not even been completed yet an picture-4-DuPont-Food_1A d already many are urging yet another. The long, hard, costly journey away from ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which began in the early 90s, continues, with a 2010 step down in production and eventual phase out of hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-22 refrigerant in new HVAC/R applications. But soon after hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) became the established alternative, many in Europe began urging yet another costly, arduous trek - away from HFCs and toward "natural refrigerants." The igniter behind all the commotion is the hot topic of the day - global warming. Read more ...

Cooling: Sound Idea

Cooling with the power of sound might very well represent the next wave in refrigeration. The science behind the idea is called thermoacoustics, and was originally developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The technology has since matured into an environmentally friendly cooling technique that is now available for some cryogenic applications and poised to break out into larger markets. Learn more.

Cooling: Enhanced Exchangers picture-1-PF2-cutaway

Improving the efficiency of vapor-compression systems has justifiably focused on the electro-mechanical devices that actually consume energy, such as compressors and fans, but more attention is now being paid to heat exchangers, those passive, unheralded components that play a key role in overall system efficiency. It's actually a dual role, as one heat exchanger rejects heat on the condenser side of the system and another heat exchanger absorbs heat on the evaporator side. Find out more.

Decoration: Inducing Interest

Designers are always looking for new ways to make their products stand out from the competition, and those working on induction cooktop designs have recently been provided with a new option for achieving a distinguished appearance. Full story.

Decoration: Classy Glass classy glass Fig-1A

For many years, glass coatings have served to brighten and beautify the world. Myriad soft drink and beer bottles have been coated, allowing customers to immediately recognize their favorite brands. Recent building designs are incorporating more coated glass with both color and functional properties. The design of appliances should be no different. New designs and decorating techniques will imbue appliances with novel appearances, allowing consumers new choices when contemplating appliance purchases. Read more.

Fluid Handling: Big Gains from Tiny Valve Fluid Handling Figure-1-pda-6

Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) have been around for more than two decades. The highest volumes of MEMS devices are sold as inkjet print cartridges and pressure sensors. Recently, high-resolution gyros and angular rate sensors have found application in handheld GPS systems and personal computers. MEMS devices are also found throughout various vehicle systems that control the fuel, engine, and airbag deployment. As with many other technologies, MEMS devices originally developed for the vehicle industry have found application elsewhere. Learn more.

Emerson Climate Technologies

The C-Series Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) is designed and optimized for use i emerson-expnaionCvalve n R-410A systems. This difference is critically important as the industry moves closer to 2010, the deadline for eliminating production of new systems designed for R-22 and other HCFC refrigerants. The C-Series TXV provides the most precise superheat control in the industry, resulting in greatly enhanced compressor protection. When combined with the Copeland Scroll compressor, the C-Series TXV becomes a critical element in the industry's most energy efficient R-410A systems. It joins the EKZ Filter Drier in the R-410A optimized product lineup of Emerson valves, controls and system protectors. Other key features of the C-Series TXV include: best in class reverse flow capacity, balanced-port construction, newly designed power element and charge , and hermetic leak-free construction. Littelfuse Inc.

The SP72x Series of SCR Diode Arrays for Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is welittelfuse2a ll suited for protection of microprocessor/logic inputs, data bus lines, analog device inputs, and many other voltage clamp applications. It features an operating voltage range from 2V to 30V, surge current of 14A with an 8x20µs waveform, a response time of 2ns rise time, input capacitance of 5pF maximum, and leakage current of 5nA typical, 20nA maximum. The thyristor-based design of the SP725 silicon diode array utilizes two bipolar SCR/diode structures to protect each of the four inputs (typically external signal or bus lines). Its operation is similar to what is known as a steering diode, but it has lower capacitance and leakage current for a given impulse rating. This means less chance of communication signal distortion. Each SCR structure is triggered on by any current that biases the SCR into conduction against the supply rails. Want to learn more?

Selco Products Co.

he T60 Encapsulated Thermostat is designed for manufacturers requiring a hi Selco-sealed-thermo ghly reliable thermostat in wet or damp environments. Featuring an all-plastic sealed housing that eliminates corrosion and prevents water damage, the T60 offers users a smaller package, lower cost and longer life than competitive models. Suitable applications for the T60 temperature controller include refrigeration defrost control, heat pumps and HVAC applications. It is an automatic reset thermostat featuring a factory calibrated fixed bi-metal disc mounted adjacent to the monitored surface. It provides a rapid response to temperature changes and is built to open or close on rise at the desired set point. The T60 quickly adapts to 5/16 in. or 3/8 in. tubing with or without clip. A clip can be provided to hold the sensing element firmly against the surface. Read more.

very small package. The TGB 2013 brush motor features the company's ironlesscore. The motors measures 2 in. diameter by 3.87 in. long and weighs only 34 oz. It delivers 400 watts (0.5 HP) of continuous shaft power with a maximum efficiency of 86 percent. At 18-volts, the motor runs at 13,400 rpm producing 40 oz-in of torque while drawing 26 amps. The linearity between torque and current allows a very high peak torque of 240 oz-in. The low inductance architecture of the motor permits faster current reversal at the commutation point, which reduces brush arcing and drastically improves brush life expectancy.
