COVER STORY
Power: A New Appliance Arrives
03_AD_March_08
A rare event is occurring in the home appliance cosmos - the birth of a new star. The thing is not just an improved product that is smaller, faster, more powerful or more efficient. Nor is it just an upgraded product featuring more bells and whistles. Instead, this emergent star represents an entire new category of home appliance - the micro CHP unit. CHP stands for combined heat and power, and the term micro is used to distinguish it from larger scale commercial implementations. While individual home generators and home heating equipment have been on the market for a long time, innovative packages that produce both heat and electricity may very well become the next, must-have, great thing for the home. Metals: Flashy Finish picture-1-Sandvik-0720234

Using an eye-catching finish has become an increasingly used method to differentiate products from the competition and excite the consumer's interest. For OEMs using prefinished metals for either cabinets or trim pieces, the options for achieving a new look have also grown. While the idea of using prefinished metals isn't new, there are new opportunities to exploit them. Those opportunities arise from the introduction of new materials and changing consumer tastes. Today's consumers are more amenable to colorful designs, but they also have practical concerns, such as fingerprint resistance and finish durability. Find out more.

Switches & Relays: Semiconductor Solution

Lead-Graphic-IES5541A-IC
The electric skillet, as we know it, was first designed more than 54 years ago using a bi-metal thermostat and heating coil or element embedded in the pan. The low input power heater, combined with the thermal mass of the pan and contents, was an excellent design that provided good temperature control and simmering. Read more.
