   JUNE 2007 ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS

EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN COVER

Clever Creations

True, the headline sounds like the name of a too cute, upscale, boutique bakery, but some derivation of the word “create” just had to be in there. The originality found in this year’s crop of winners demanded it. Some of the products do things in an entirely new way, while others do things that simply weren’t done before. At the same time, other designers proved that there are always something new you can do to a simple box.  Read more ...

ELECTRONICS

Embedded Linux

By the Spring of this year, about 20 million Linux-based mobile phone handsets had been delivered to the market worldwide. This striking achievement occurred despite many experts all around constantly dismissing the idea that embedded Linux could play such a role in the market. “Linux is too big, it’s too slow and it certainly isn’t real-time, so it can’t possibly be a realistic solution,” they all said. But the fact is, through the efforts of the open source Linux community and commercial Linux suppliers such as MontaVista, Linux took the market by storm. Read more ...

FANS & BLOWERS

Fine Tuning the Flow picture-2-fans-and-blowers-

Government regulations and educated consumers are forcing appliance manufacturers, HVAC/R companies, and makers of electronics to develop more efficient products that make less noise, and are more environmentally friendly. Because fans and their motors are often a root cause of power consumption and acoustic noise, these manufacturers are looking to their fan/blower and motor suppliers for answers. Read more ...

DESIGN DILEMMA? ASK US!

we will pose that question to our readers.

READERS DESIGN DILEMMAS

DESIGN DILEMMA: Polymer Expertise Needed

I have developed a concept of tear it open plastic disposable mineral water, soft drinks and liquor bottles such that once the contents are consumes, the user pulls a ring and it tears off a small portion from the bottle's body making it absolutely unusable or refillable.

The result is that the consumer is assured that the bottled water or drinks they purchase packed in such bottles are genuine and no counterfeit material or duplication. I have got the design patented and also made a small mold for a bottle.

The problem is on pulling the ring it does not tear off the body of the bottle. I understand one needs to mix some other polymers with the plastic which can build in properties of tearing it in the plastic.

Being a designer, I need to know from polymer experts what type of material can give me the desired results with PP, HDPE, and PET.

DESIGN DILEMMA: Resistance Heating Equipment

1.    Resistance heating equipment used for stators bonding: Who are the suppliers?
2.    Who are the motor/generator manufacturers using self-bonding wires in the world?
3.    Who are the suppliers of self-bonding wires?
4.    For what application are self-bonding wires currently used? And, if not, then why?
5.    Details about resistance heating variables calculations ? (Any table for different wire gauges and specific amount of current (AC/DC) used for resistance heating required for self-bonding).
6.    Cost comparison of the product with self-bonding CU wires vs. enameled CU Wires?

Please submit any responses to adamsl@bnpmedia.com
