Electrolux is considering discontinuing compressor production in the United States. This would impact two factories – Americold in Cullman, Alabama and Athens Products in Athens, Tennessee. The factories are part of product line components in business area Professional Indoor.

The Cullman factory produces hermetic compressors for use in household refrigerators and food freezers. It is presently unprofitable and a major investment is needed to produce the next generation of products.

The Athens Products factory manufactures small motors used in compressors made by Americold and in residential air conditioners made by others. A closure of the compressor factory would necessitate a reduction of staff at Athens Products.

Electrolux is the world’s largest producer of powered appliances for kitchen, cleaning and outdoor use, such as refrigerators, washing machines, cookers, vacuum cleaners, chain saws, lawn mowers, and garden tractors. In 2000, Group sales were SEK 124.5 billion and the Group had 87,000 employees. Every year, customers in more than 150 countries buy more than 55 million Electrolux Group products for both consumer and professional use. The Electrolux Group includes famous appliance brands such as AEG, Electrolux, Zanussi, Frigidaire, Eureka, Flymo and Husqvarna.
