Samsung Electronics America, already the first to bring a NUON(tm) enhanced DVD player to market, introduces its second generation DVD-N501 DVD/CD/CD-R player. Nuon technology profoundly improves DVD performance and enables an unprecedented level of interactivity. The uniquely designed player, one of ten new Samsung DVD models to be introduced this year, will be shipping this month with a compelling MSRP of $279.99.

Samsung's DVD-N501 uses a new 128-bit processor and an enhanced optical pickup to bring users new entertainment options from an array of audio/video formats. All DVD discs can benefit from NUON features, including, smooth high-speed scanning at up to 256 times normal play speed, and an innovative MediaMacro zoom and pan function that allows users to zoom in on a portion of the screen even while a DVD is playing. Sophisticated video processing ensures that even these magnified images are always sharp and clear.

The player handles playback of CD-R discs and MP3 files - formats that have proved popular with downloadable music fans. The DVD-N501's dual-mode optical pickup can read DVD, DVD-R, Video CD versions 1.1 and 2.0 as well as pre-recorded CD discs. The high-speed processor allows genuine HDCD decoding for full 20-Bit sound quality from these specially encoded 16-bit discs.

NUON's popular Virtual Light Machine - which adds color splashes that dance to the rhythm as your favorite CD is played - has been enhanced to include over 150 effects. The Multi Picture Strobe and Multi Angle Thumbnails functions have been updated and enhanced in the DVD-N501. While this level of functionality could be daunting on a standard DVD player, Samsung's unique joystick remote and user interface make controlling this powerful player a snap.

Makers of DVDs are now tapping into the enhanced benefits and possibilities of creating DVDs with NUON enhanced features. Twentieth Century Fox is one such company, having released the movie "Bedazzled" with the following NUON enhanced features:

  • Dynamic book marking of scenes from the film along thematic lines
  • Pre-selected close-up zooms of interesting scene elements combined with background text highlighting the story behind the scenes
  • A dynamic chapter select feature that displays a full-motion video thumbnail view of a chapter combined with a written scene description so users can easily determine where they want to enter the movie.

Claude Frank, Senior Manager of Digital Convergence Marketing at Samsung, said, "The original Samsung NUON player broke new ground in establishing the DVD player as the central source component for audio and video systems. The DVD-N501 builds on this legacy with improved functions, superior fidelity and intuitive ease of use, yet at an even more affordable price point. We are very confident that the DVD-N501 will be instrumental in increasing the popularity of the NUON(tm) advantage."

The powerful player is housed in a full component-width steel chassis and its sleek angled front panel will be right at home next to the finest audio and video components. The DVD M201 contains all of these features, plus expands the functionality of the DVD player with a Dual Laser Pickup that can read DVD, CD and CD-R formats. The DVD-M201 will be available in February 2001 for an MSRP of $159.99.
